Carifika Ghana Disaster Emergency Relief

Ghana is Drowning. Families are Burning. We Cannot Turn Away

The recent catastrophic floods and fires have shattered lives across Accra, Cape Coast, and the Western Region. CARIFIKA Ghana is on the ground, but we need your heart and your help to rebuild what has been lost

When the Skies Opened, Hope Was Swept Away

On Monday, June 29, 2026, a relentless climate nightmare struck the southern coastline of Ghana. Torrential downpours poured an unprecedented 140 millimeters of water over our cities in just a few hours.

·         In Greater Accra: The bustling capital became a graveyard of dreams. In neighborhoods like Odawna, Adabraka, and Kaneshie, streets transformed into neck-deep rivers. As families swam through contaminated waters to save their children, a horrific fire erupted near the Kwame Nkrumah Circle, trapping terrified citizens between rising waves and roaring flames. Twelve lives were lost in the capital alone, including a mother and her young child, violently swept away by the current.

·         In Cape Coast and Central Region: Raging stormwaters tore through low-lying communities, instantly collapsing over 58 homes and burying families under structural rubble. 18 lives were tragically cut short. Critical highways were severed, leaving thousands stranded and completely isolated from emergency medical care.

·         In the Western Region: Saturated industrial and urban zones saw secondary drainage networks fail entirely. Local markets, small family businesses, and generational livelihoods were completely buried under thick mud and filth within hours.

The Heartbreak After the Water Recedes:

Right now, over 40,000 Ghanaians are completely displaced. Mothers are sleeping on damp floors in makeshift havens with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Children have lost their schools, fathers have lost their livelihoods, and communities are left carrying the unbearable grief of burying their loved ones.

THE CRUELEST TRUTH: THE ENDLESS ANNUAL RITUAL

This is not a one-time disaster. This is a tragic annual nightmare.

Every single year when the rainy season arrives, Ghanaians are forced to brace themselves for the same heartbreaking ritual. Drains overflow, streets become rivers, and families are forced to watch everything they own wash away.

The economic toll creates a brutal, ongoing cycle of poverty.Every single June, hard-working families lose their beds, their clothing, their children's schoolbooks, and their entire business stocks.Money that should be saved for healthcare, university, or building a stable future is stripped away to replace basic survival necessities. They rebuild from nothing, only for the clouds to gather again next year.We cannot let them face this ruins alone anymore

CARIFIKA Ghana: Breaking the Cycle, Protecting the Vulnerable

As the Ghanaian arm of the global Carifika network, the Carifika Network for Sustainable Development (CNSD) is uniquely positioned to turn your empathy into immediate, sustainable action. Operating out of our Kumasi headquarters, we refuse to accept this annual destruction as an unavoidable act of nature. We step forward as a catalyst for long-term resilience and emergency transformation.

In close strategic partnership with the Ghana Red Cross Society, we are leveraging our infrastructure to deploy a model that addresses both instant relief and future prevention:

·         Immediate Emergency Relief: Providing clean drinking water, emergency food kits, blankets, and urgent medical supplies to prevent the spread of waterborne diseases in displaced camps.

·         WASH Infrastructure Restoration: Rebuilding damaged Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) facilities to ensure safe, sanitary living conditions so that annual floods do not bring deadly epidemics.

·         Climate Resilience & Prevention: Investing in community-level water desilting, environmental sustainability, and defensive water infrastructure to systematically protect low-lying neighborhoods from future rainy seasons.
